Prof. Dr. Cumhur ÇÖKMÜŞ was born in 1958 in Aydın and completed his primary and secondary education there. He completed his undergraduate education as the top scoring student at Ankara University Faculty of Science, Department of Botany-Zoology in 1977-1981. Prof. Dr. Çökmüş completed his master degree in 1984, and he studied Biology and Microbiology in the department of Biology of Ankara University Institute of Science for his doctoral until 1989. Part of his doctoral dissertation studies have been conducted at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in the Department of Biology (Virginia, USA).


He had worked in the Department of Biology at Ankara University Faculty of Science. He was at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in the Department of Biology between 1988 and 1989 for his doctoral dissertation studies, and he was there as a senior scientist between 1989 and 1990, and as a visiting professor from 1991-1992. He was also at Arizona State University Zoology Department as a visiting professor between 1994 and 1995.


He worked as Assistant Professor between 1990 and 1993, Associate Professor between 1993 and 1998, and as a professor between 1998 and 2015 in the Department of Biology at Molecular Biology Department of Ankara University Faculty of Science. He was appointed as a Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences at Konya Food and Agriculture University in 2015. He supervised about 50 graduate and doctoral studies during his duty. He has 37 original articles published in international refereed journals, 21 articles published in national refereed journals, and 315 references cited in Web of Science in his articles. He has also contributed significantly to the field of bacteriology with his articles on two new bacterial species and a new bacterial strain.


Prof. Dr. Çökmüş has been assigned as the head of the Department of Biology  at Ankara University, Faculty of Science (2000-2008),  and as the head of Molecular Biology department (2000-2005, 2010-2014). He has worked for The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey as the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee (TEYDEB-BIYOTEG) (2006-2009, 2009-2012), as the Advisory Board Member / Coordinator (2013-2014), as TUBITAK-BTDB Advisory Board Member (2013-2016), and as TUBITAK-BIDEB Chairman of Academic Committee of Biology Olympiads (2011-2014). He was the Vice Rector of Aksaray University between 2008 and 2010, and Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences between 2008 and 2009, he also worked as the Advisory Board Member of Pesticide Licensing Commission of the Ministry of Health (1999-2010). He has held academic and administrative positions at Ankara University Scientific Research Unit Tender Committee as the head between 2000 and 2008 and as a member between 1998 and 2000. He is a member of the Association of Biotechnology and the Biologists Association. He has worked as a translation editor for the translation of "Brock Biology of Microorganisms" into Turkish and has received "TUBA University Lecture Books Copyright and Best Translation Prize” in 2011. Between 2014 and 2017, he has served as Vice Rector and Deputy Secretary General of Konya Food and Agriculture University. He is married and he has two children.
